Wuffa Viking and Saxon Reenactment Society
As a reenactment group we aim to be as authentic to the 9th & 10th centuries as is possible. Living history is the term we used to describe pretty much everything else we do when we are at shows that isn't combat. It includes the clothes we wear, the tents we put up and the displays we put together. As one of our main aims is to educate the public on what life was like in the 9th & 10th century we try and make sure what we have is accurate to the time.
We look at archaeological finds and reports to help us recrat the items we use, for example looking at leather shoe finds from modern day York, (then Jorvik) or dying our dyeing our clothes colours that would have been achievable at the time with natural dyes.
We then share this knowledge with each other in the group through discussions and workshops. This then gets shown to the public at shows with the displays we put together. These displays can be a table full of natural dye ingredients or someone sat nalbinding and other ancient crafts.
If there are any crafts you would like to learn, many of our members are happy to share their knowledge. As a group of volunteers, we can't guarantee who will be available but we will do what we can to if not teach you something, at least point you in the right direction.
A good place to start is by talking with a Living History Officer. These are members who have shown a particular interest in maintaining and improving the authenticity standards of the group and are very knowledgeable in particular topics or more general areas of expertise.
