Wuffa Viking and Saxon Reenactment Society
Wuffa uses a style of combat know as "Western". It uses metal, blunt weapons, but not full force hits. We aim to hit our opponents hard enough that they can feel a hit. but not hard enough it hurts them. The permitted hit zones are T-Shirt and shorts, whilst avoiding the head, neck, joints and other sensitive areas.
Combat is only ever done when a Huscarl is present. Huscarls are a type of officer within Wuffa. They have proven that they can lead combat safely and are responsible for training and teaching other fighters. It's these members who will make sure that equipment is safe for use and that other members are practicing and progressing though our grading system.
The grading system is a set of tick boxes and practical tests that show that you can fight safely with each weapon. For example the fighter has demonstrated they can safely attack and block with and without a shield.
If you decide this is something you want to try, please let us know when you plan to visit. We'll then try and make sure we have the equipment you need to get you started.
We start all new fighters learning with a seax. This is essentially a large knife and is used to teach how to strike safely and get a fighter used to how to move. We then add in a shield and teach blocking and foot work.
There is no set time frame for how long this stage takes. Some do it in 4 weeks, others take 8. Its entirely up to you and your own ability. We absolutely encourage all to continually improve and become better and better fighters but we also understand that this is a hobby and everyone will move at their own pace.
Once you pass the seax grading, you can then move on to other weapons including axe, one and two handed spear, sword and broad axe. We even do a bit of archery and javelin throwing too.
Lastly, a big draw to the hobby is line fights and shield walls. This is where you stand side by side with others and face an opposing team. You'll be taught formations and manoeuvre such as how to form an arrow wall, boar's snout and marching in time.
